Who we are looking for

An experienced Linux Infrastructure Engineer to provide specialist support, development, and lifecycle management for platforms and services hosted on open source technologies.

Systems Operations are responsible for supporting, maintaining and improving our mission critical compute and storage platforms that underpin our highly demanding products and services.

You will be collaborating with Infrastructure, Development, and DevOps teams to advance and advocate our use of open source technology with core values such as automation, scalability, observability and security.

In tandem with the operational responsibilities, you will be heavily involved in several key initiatives aimed at addressing our current and future challenges. In addition, we actively encourage progressive ideas that will assist in driving us forwards.

This is a great opportunity for an individual with a software engineering mindset, who is passionate about modern, scalable technology, and methodologies, to progress in a fast moving environment.

You may be required to provide on call coverage which will require a weekend in office presence on a rota basis and out of hours’ support.

Preferred skills and experience

Deep knowledge in Linux (preferably Red Hat derivatives) operating system stacks and services.

Experience automating and managing infrastructure at scale using tools such as Ansible, Jenkins, Terraform.

Solid understanding of Version Control (Git) and CI/CD principles.

High level of competency in one or more of the following - bash, Ansible, Python, Go.

Community and/or commercial containerisation technologies (Kubernetes, Docker, OpenShift).

Fundamental understanding of networking, storage and virtualisation.

Experience in collecting and visualising metric and log data using tools such as Splunk and Elastic.

Effective time management, organisation and work prioritisation to meet deadlines while maintaining excellent attention to detail.

A logical approach to solving problems under pressure and an active communicator on technical issues.

Strong academic background, ideally with a BSc/MSc IT related degree or relevant industry experience.

Main Responsibilities

Collaborating with other technology specialists within the teams.

Challenging what we do, identifying how to maximise our current technology investment, and recognising where we can leverage open source technologies.

Managing privately hosted containers platforms.

Designing and engineering container platform enhancements, upgrades and API integrations.

Recognising areas for continuous improvement and opportunities for automation. Providing subject matter lifecycle management and support of existing open source services and collaborating with application teams.

Delivering both physical and software activities to agreed timescales in line with the agreed delivery frameworks and SDLC.

Defining and enhancing system monitoring and visibility using modern tooling and practices.

Providing support escalation for high severity incidents and problems.

Mentoring and coaching less experienced engineers.

Taking part in an on call rota to support Linux systems.
